Where can I find resources to help me build "carriage house" garage doors for my new garage? My wife and I just bought a house that has a very old two-car garage with the old style, carriage house doors, like a barn. The doors aren't in great shape, and are not secure. I looked into the cost of replacing them with new doors and, yikes! it is >$1,000 for each set of doors. I would like to build new doors with locks, but don't even know how to get started. Are there any resources around that I can consult to guide me through this very exciting project?
How does a group of flies get into a house when the doors/windows are all closed? Do they have nests? In the past couple of days, we've noticed at least 5-6 flies in our house, which we've killed right away. But for some reason, 2-3 reappear. Today when I arrived home after work, I saw three on the sliding door and went to kill them with Raid. When I started to spray, at least 7-8 flew out from behind the blinds. I was freaked out because all the windows and doors were closed all day. How is that possible? Please help!!!

Why do exterior doors on a house open inward? I handle all the fix-it stuff around the house and worked with contractors on two gut renovations + come from a family of DIY'ers. My husband, who is not so handy, recently said I screwed up because our door to the back garden opens in instead of out. I told him that is how exterior doors are - it's convention, but I'd love to give him a bonafide answer.
Which is best? Paint garage doors to match house or contrasting color? I want the overall look of the house to be welcoming and "homey". Do I make the living space the focus by painting the garage doors a darker/muted color, separating the two areas and making the garage "retreat" ... or do I hide the garage by painting it the same color as the house, blending it into the living space?
What is the name of that haunted house that has a lot of doors that lead to nowhere? I saw on a haunted house special on the Travel Channel a segment on this haunted house that had a bunch of doors that didn't lead to a specific place or room. Some of the second story doors led to the outside of the house so when someone opens the door, it's like opening the door to the outside but no balcony or anything. Does anyone know the name or location of it? Thanks! Oh yeah, it is the Winchester House! Thanks!
I need new closet doors in an old house with odd size openings--any ideas?? I am helping to remodel a 1950s house with odd sized closets. The existing doors were bamboo accordian style and were shot. The closets are 41-44 inches wide and 95 inches tall (not exact measurements but very close). Any ideas on what type of doors we could use? We may have to get creative and use a cabinet over a standard height door or something.....
Doors will not latch on new house? I have bought a house that the inside doors will not close properly. It seems that when we turn the knob on the doors they come undone even if they are in the lock position. Builders will you tell me how to make the doors stay closed . there is a small gap in the door frame. Can this be fixed by changing the knobs latch--or will it ruin the door to move the lock?. This is only on the inside doors--ok DIY people--tell me how to fix this problem.
I have oak trim and doors all over my house. Can I paint the mantlepiece white? My ceiling is white, the walls are a sand color, except for the fireplace wall. It is red. I love the look of white trim, but cannot change all the trim in my house. My mantlepiece is large and oak and is in the corner of the room. I like some of the answers I received before. I accidentally deleted my question, so I am asking it again. Any suggestions?
Replacing doors with windows in a cinderblock house? I live in a cinderblock-and-stucco house in Florida. I have a west-facing sliding glass door in my family room as well as a "pool door" in my bathroom that I want to take out and replace with windows. Do I call a contractor? A mason? How do I go about getting estimates for this kind of work? What should I ask/look for/expect?
Where can I get keys for the inside doors in my house? My 3 year old keeps locking the bathroom door and the builder only gave us one extra keys which is lost. They are the plain straight keys with a small flat end. There are no screws on the outside of the lock, so we always end up borrowing a neighbors key. If anyone knows what type of key this is, i.e. the name of it, please let me know so that I can get some extra. Thanks!

John, thanks... HomeDepot wants $225 PER DOOR to install - plus they are charging a manditory $30 measuring fee and $40 delivery fee (so they are sure the right door is there) seems like they're ripping me a new one. oh - and that price doesn't include the price of the actual door that i pick out! lol
